Here are three customers who couldn't resist the temptation.

The Jonathon Davis family with newest members

Jordan Wollenman with Tori (Pineapple GCC on the left)
and newest family member, Lani (Yellow-sided GCC on the right)

Both Jordan and the Davis family have their babies home and Hunter is still waiting until Harry and Hermione are fully fledged and weaned.... it won't be long!

We'd love to hand-raise a sweet baby for you too!

Tribute to Baxter Kitty

How sad it is when a companion is suddenly 'snatched' away.

Our Baxter Kitty - hanging out in our kitchen!

As many of you know, we live out in the country in the foothills of Mt. Rainier in WA State. We have commercial timber and forest all around.... and coyotes too! Last week Jeremy heard the coyotes and then a 'yelp.' And he knew that it was Baxter. When Baxter didn't come home the next morning (he was a free spirit), our worst fears were realized.

Baxter was a GREAT kitty... he showed up at our side door shortly after we built our house and Jeremy and I have been blessed to have had Baxter in our lives for the last 7 (ish) years.  Here's to you Baxter. See you in heaven!

Second time is the charm!

Just a quick not to say, I hope you are having a great summer! Our lives have been TOO busy for words.  Since my last post - long time ago, Rosie lost her baby (after 2.5 days) and then she and Beaker  romanced once again....

So today I can say that we have another EGG. God only knows if this baby will hatch or not but I wanted to keep our follows in the loop.  We Dont know why the other baby died - hard to speculate.

What we do know is that we have another egg and we will keep our fingers crossed.  Will you join us in praying for a successful birth!

Beaker & Rosie are NEW Parents!

This evening we heard peeps.... Baby Beaker peeps.... We could NOT believe our ears!  Finally after a LONG time and many clutches, Beaker and Rosie are finally parents.  Rosie has been  laying on three eggs for about 28 days now.  So today, the FIRST egg hatched.  I candled the eggs about 7-10 days ago and we knew that for sure that one of them is infertile (clear). The other two looked different so I wasn't sure if they were fertile or not.  I guess at least one was... LOL!

It wasn't always 'romance' between Beaker and Rosie
.  Although they have been living together for about a year now, they had a VERY rocky start to their relationship; now, they  live together and are new parents... it's hard to believe. Here is a short video clip I took in January 2011 called "Do NOT touch my eggs."  Enjoy...

Please pray that the baby/babies are healthy and grow as babies should with mom and dad over the next couple of weeks.

Showering Congo African Grey

It just delights us so much to see progress.... you?

In this situation we exercised patience,  prayed and hoped for the best. AND we are seeing the fruit of our patience. Silverback, our 2 year old Congo African Grey (CAG), has been a plucker (actually shredding) of her tail and feathers on her left wing. Silverback is a relatively new member of our personal flock and we LOVE her so much.  She came to us with a feather shredding problem. The vet conducted all the necessary tests to determine her shredding was not nutritional in nature - meaning nothing wrong on the inside and her diet is good. So be began working with her on changing things in her environment.

Birds need a job!
CAGs are amazingly smart.  All birds need a job but Greys, especially. They are stimulus junkies....the more things to DO and see the better. So we did just that and we are seeing progress... Take a look at this short video clip of Silverback taking a shower. I took this short clip just the other day. Enjoy!

Arrowin - He was LOST and now he is FOUND (Luke 15:31-32)

A very scary story with a VERY happy ending.  Here is the thumbnail...

Arrowin, 5.5 month old Congo African Grey went outside with his mom (Sherry) for a little sunshine on Saturday 5/12 - this time without his harness.  Something spooked Arrowin and he took off... way up high he went and out of sight. Sherry called me, panicked, and we both then called on our networks.  Thanks to Russ at Northwest Exotic Bird Society http://nwexoticbirdsociety.org for referring Sherry to the Olympic Bird Fanciers http://olympicbirdfanciers.com/ where members of the Fanciers came out to help as you will see on the video.... Way to go - a big "shout out" to you all!

I spoke with Sherry after Arrowin was found and she commented on the abundance of calls she received from folks who wanted her to know that their thoughts and prayers were with them.

What to do if you lose a bird....

  • Pray
  • Report a lost bird at http://www.911parrotalert.com/
  • Stay calm, if that's possible
  • Call everyone you know and alert them to the situation
  • Put up posters in our local area
  • Call local schools in the area the bird was last seen so that the kids can look
  • Contact any local bird groups for their assistance
  • Drive the area the bird may be in and "listen" for the bird's call.

Bird people are the BEST folks in the world...
Sherry and Rick and Beaker's Parrot Place are forever grateful for the care and love you extended through this most difficult time for Arrowin and his human flock.

OUCH THAT HURTS! bird will be birds....

The unfortunate happened last night... Unfortunate YES..., uncommon, NO.

The Scenario
I put baby "Carrot Top" (Red Factor Sun Conure) on a java wood table top stand in our main bird area (picture #1) and I left the room for a few minutes... I heard "Carrot Top" call out. I found her on the floor below Gerty's
(our Greenwing) cage and she was bleeding.

We (Jeremy and I) responded quickly - we washed of the wound and determined that we needed to get her to the vet right away (after hours emergency vet). LONG STORY SHORT.... Gerty snipped at "Carrot Top" and injured a couple of her toes (cut them almost off). The vet recommended we try to save the two toes and we concurred. "Carrot Top" had emergency surgery.

I picked up "Carrot Top" from the veterinarian this morning. She looked great and the staff said that she was such a SWEET bird! (I wonder why :-). She has two splints on two of her toes (see above photo). Her mommy and daddy (Alison and Mike) visited with her today and "Carrot Top" was in good spirits and all had a great visit!

THE LESSON - bird owners, exercise due diligence in supervising your companion birds (with dogs, cats and other birds). AND, if the unfortunate happens and you have been responsible, you can rest assured knowing that birds will birds (or animals will be animals).
